Sri Lankan Recipe and the Love for Curry

Sri Lanka’s most loved recipe is the Sri Lankan Curry recipe that is normally part of their daily meal with rice. If in other countries, curry meals are only limited to chicken and fish, in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan Curry recipe also covers vegetables and fruits as their main ingredient. How important is a curried meal to a Sri Lankan?

A normal Sri Lankan meal is always composed of the main curry (e.g. chicken, fish, etc.) With their love of curry, they also have within the meal a number of other curries with lentils/vegetables as the main ingredients. Side dishes are even patterned after a Sri Lankan curry recipe, an example of which is the so called “mallung,” composed of leaves that are chopped and topped with red onions and coconut. It is a fact that coconut milk is a big part of a curry and in most Sri Lankan meals coconut milk is used to give a rich flavor—a unique one at that.

Every Sri Lankan Curry recipe is different because the taste and the finished product are dependent on the one who made the meal. Sri Lankans believe in using a lot of spices in their food and have the habit of not following the exact recipe to a “T.” This means that every Sri Lankan Curry recipe will have a bit of a different flavor or taste. People from different parts of the island of Sri Lanka also have varied cooking ways and styles as acquired from tradition.
